Technical expertise is only part of what makes an effective Expert Witness. Experts also need to understand their duties, the procedures within which they work, how to present their opinion clearly in writing and how to give evidence effectively when challenged.
The Academy of Experts provides practical Expert Witness training for professionals at every stage of their Expert career, from those considering their first instructions to experienced Experts looking to refresh or develop particular skills.
Most of our UK public courses are delivered online, with in-person training also available periodically and by request. We also provide dedicated overseas programmes and tailored in-house training for firms and organisations.

Choosing your Expert Witness training
There is no single prescribed route through our courses. The right programme will depend on your existing experience, the jurisdiction in which you work and the type of Expert work you undertake. The following provides a useful starting point.
Foundation Course
Our principal introduction to Expert Witness work. The Foundation Course provides an intensive grounding in the role and responsibilities of the Expert, the Expert’s Report, procedure and preparation for giving evidence.
For those new to Expert Witness work, we recommend attending the Foundation Course before, or as early as possible after, beginning to accept Expert instructions.
Roles & Responsibilities
A focused examination of what it means to act as an Expert Witness, including the Expert’s overriding duties, instructions, terms of engagement, fact finding, reports and meetings of Experts.
In the UK this subject forms part of the Foundation Course. It is also delivered as a stand-alone course for overseas programmes, including Hong Kong, and for in-house training.
The Expert’s Report
An Expert may be judged as much by the quality and clarity of the report as by the underlying technical opinion. This course concentrates on producing reports that are independent, properly structured, compliant and useful to the court or tribunal.
In the UK report writing forms part of the Foundation Course. The Expert’s Report is also available as a stand-alone course in other jurisdictions and for in-house programmes.
Procedure Rules
Expert evidence does not exist in isolation. Experts need to understand the procedural framework within which their evidence is commissioned, prepared, discussed and presented.
This course is particularly valuable after the Foundation Course and should ideally be undertaken early in an Expert’s practice.
Practical Law
Experts do not need to become lawyers, but they do need to understand the legal environment in which they are working. Practical Law provides an accessible grounding in the legal concepts, terminology and processes that Experts are likely to encounter.
It can be taken at any stage and is useful both for Expert Witness work and for professionals involved more generally in disputes and commercial matters.
Into Court
Giving oral evidence requires a different set of skills from preparing a report. Into Court provides practical preparation for presenting and defending Expert evidence, including the experience of cross-examination.
It is valuable early in an Expert’s career and is also an effective refresher and confidence-builder before a court, tribunal or arbitral appearance.
Training for experienced Experts
Training should not stop once an Expert has established a practice. Rules, procedure and judicial expectations continue to develop, while even experienced Experts can benefit from reviewing the way they prepare and present their evidence.
Our advanced programme includes:
- Advanced Report Writing, practical training for experienced Experts looking to analyse, refine and improve their reports.
- Essential Update, keeping experienced Experts up to date with developments in procedure, practice and the issues affecting Expert evidence.
In-house Expert Witness training
All of our Expert Witness courses can also be delivered for firms, professional practices and other organisations. Training can range from a private delivery of one of our established courses to a programme tailored around the experience, sector, jurisdiction and requirements of your team.
