Individual Membership

Benefits of Membership

Membership of The Academy of Experts demonstrates to your prospective clients and members of the legal profession looking to instruct you that you have the professional skills and qualifications to provide expert opinions and advice. In addition it shows that you can demonstrate, through submission of evidence and references a thorough understanding of the role that an expert witness plays in the legal system.

Being a member of a professional body adds value to your credentials and qualifications and being part of a body, such as the Academy, that is dedicated to providing excellence in supporting its expert members, is no exception.

Our accreditation process is managed by independent assessors overseen by a vetting committee which is chaired by a practising solicitor. Once accredited you will be entitled to use the post nominals relevant to your grade of membership (SAAE Senior Associate, MAE Full Member, FAE Fellow). Full members currently pay £372 per year. New members pay a non-refundable vetting fee (£150 for a full member) and a reduced first year membership of £150.

You don’t have to be already practising as an expert or have testified in court to join. Associate membership is ideal for those who are expert in their subject and want to extend their practice into court work or for those who already assist experienced expert witnesses and want to work towards practising in their own right. The Academy provides specialist training courses to help aspiring experts progress towards full membership.

If you are interested in joining the Academy, please complete our pre-application questionnaire and the Academy office will be happy to help you decide which membership level is right for you. Corporate membership is also available to companies active in providing expert witness services. See below for details.

Academy membership also provides a range of benefits to help members in their day to day practice.

The Academy’s online register, ExpertSearch, is used on a daily basis by solicitors looking for qualified, accredited experts. It is also used by them to check the qualifications and accreditation status of experts.

As an accredited Member, you are entitled to apply for an entry on the register. A basic Bronze entry listing with your qualifications, contact details and a summary of your expertise is available for £70 per year ex VAT. Additional details, such as corporate logo, personal photo and downloadable CV can be added with the Silver and Gold options for £110 and £160 respectively.

The Academy’s Code of Practice states that Members should maintain adequate professional indemnity insurance cover for their work as an expert, which currently means a minimum limit of £1 million.

This is important both for clients and for an expert’s personal protection, especially since the judgement in Jones v Kaney, a decision which confirmed that experts can be sued and held liable for professional negligence.

The Academy runs a Group Professional Indemnity Insurance Policy for your expert work starting at £298 per year for £1m cover including IPT. We can also provide run-off cover for those who have retired or ceased to act as an expert provided they have had cover under the policy

Please note that the Policy excludes proceedings or work undertaken in the USA or Canada.

The Academy Policy complies with the requirements of the RICS and ICAEW, subject to a 10% additional fee.

Please contact us for further details of the group policy

There are regular changes in the rules under which experts operate in both the courts and arbitration so it’s important for experts to be aware of these developments and to remain current in their professional practice. The Academy and its committees monitor any such changes closely and provide a range of services that assist experts in keeping up to date, including;

  • Monthly email newsletter providing case news and updates on procedure
  • Regular member meetings covering topics of interest to experts. These alternate between face to face events in Gray’s Inn, London and online. Topics covered have included the use of statistics in expert evidence, updates to CPR and conflicts of interest. We regularly hear from members of the judiciary, providing an invaluable insight into both subjects concerning experts and the perspective from the bench.
  • A complimentary subscription to TEDR magazine with case reports and articles on expert practice from around the world.
  • Discounted rates on the Academy’s training courses and These include introductory training, our invaluable ‘Into Court’ course and training on advanced topics such as Expert determination. Training is conducted online and face to face, primarily in London but we also run regular courses in Hong Kong.
  • Regular updates and commentary on expert issues on our LinkedIn page.
  • Social and networking events, including welcome events for new members, Chairman’s Lunch & President’s Dinner.

All our events provide the opportunity to learn from and be supported by other experts, something that many members find invaluable. Members may invite guests to any event. See our events calendar for full details and to book.

The Academy is active in working with the judiciary and legal profession to ensure that expert views are taken into account and that Members have access to the best possible advice and guidance.

Our Judicial Committee publishes the authoritative guidance for experts so you can be sure that you have access to  best practices. This includes for example the Model Form of Expert’s Report and Guidance Notes on Meetings of Experts, Contingency Fees and Remote Evidence.

These and a range of other guidance and technical advice on topics such as GDPR, Joint Statements, privilege and so on are available to Members in the Academy’s Knowledge Hub. This also contains recordings of past webinars and meetings on a wide range of topics including adjudication, mediation, contracts and artificial intelligence.  All of these are available without charge as part of your membership.

As a member you also have access to our Technical Helpline which provides help and advice on matters ranging from ethics, conflicts and practical issues to managing instructions in order to get paid timely.

The Academy is fortunate to have offices in the heart of legal London at 3 Gray’s Inn Square and we’re always happy to see Members when they’re in London. Our office spaces are available as a venue for meetings or more informally as a place to work or relax away from your instructing lawyers.
