[Brief_CV] => Dr Stuart Carmichael has over 35 years’ experience in the construction industry and more than 20 years working on international projects and disputes. His principal area of expertise is forensic delay and disruption analysis, including extensions of time, concurrency, prolongation and the assessment of time-related construction claims.
He has been appointed on numerous occasions as an independent Expert Witness on delay and programme matters and has prepared independent expert reports, reply reports and joint statements, participated in expert meetings, and presented oral evidence under cross-examination and concurrent expert evidence. His experience includes ICC and DIAC arbitrations, together with ad hoc proceedings across multiple jurisdictions.
Stuart’s project experience spans major infrastructure, energy and building developments, including power generation, hydroelectric, desalination and water treatment facilities, ports, bridges, roads, railways, hotels, residential developments and healthcare facilities. His work has involved both the preparation and rebuttal of delay and disruption claims for employers, contractors and other project participants.
His background in architecture, construction project management, construction law and collaborative contracting gives him a broad understanding of the technical, contractual and commercial issues associated with complex project delivery. He has extensive experience of FIDIC, NEC and JCT forms of contract and has advised on delay, claims and dispute-resolution matters throughout the lifecycle of major projects.
In addition to formal dispute work, Stuart is regularly engaged on delayed and distressed projects to review programmes, assess the causes and effects of delay and develop recovery, mitigation and acceleration strategies. He has also assisted in the negotiation and preparation of formal acceleration and supplementary agreements and in the settlement of substantial construction claims before escalation into formal proceedings.
Stuart is also accredited by The Academy of Experts as an Expert Determiner. This complements his Expert Witness and advisory work and enables him to act as an independent decision-maker in suitable construction disputes where the parties have agreed to resolve a defined issue through Expert Determination.
He has extensive experience in professional training and lecturing and has authored and co-authored papers and reports on construction, project delivery, forensic delay analysis and expert practice.
