Mike O'Connor is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at The St George Hospital and St George Private Hospital (Ramsay healthcare) where he served as Chairman of the Patient Care and Clinical Review Committee from 2010 to 2025. He was also Chairman of their Medical Advisory Committee at SGPH from 2008 to 2010. He is a Conjoint Senior Lecturer at UNSW in the Division of Womens and Childrens Health.From 2016 to 2022 he was Professor and Chairman of the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Western Sydney University. Dr O'Connor was Vice President of the Australasian College of Legal Medicine from 2016 to 2024 and was elected President of the ACLM in November 2024.For 6 years he was a Federal Councillor of the Royal Australain and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology representing NSW and was then elected Vice President of the RANZCOG serving in that role from 2002 to 2004. His RANZCOG work incliuded the development of an Indigenous Health Worker training program in antenatal care as well as adult and neonatal resuscitation courses and courses on the management of sexual assault . He established the Chapter of Military Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the RANZCOG.
Dr O'Connor postgraduate training included 8 years in the UK and the Republc of Ireland at Aberdeen,Leeds, Dublin (Rotunda Hospital) , University College Hospital,London, and the Medical Reasearch Council (Perinatal Medicie) at Northwick Park ,London.
Mike O'Connor was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the MRCOG exams in 1975 .In 1982 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Sydney University in the Discipline of Perinatal Medicine. He holds Diplomas of Child Health and Diagnostic Ultrasound.He has a Masters degree in Health Law (Sydney University) and Forensic Medicine (Monash University) .In 2009 he was created a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his longstanding work in Indigenous Health as well as his service in the Royal Australian Navy Reserve .
For the last 25 years Dr O'Connor has been an active expert witness for cases of medical negligence in Obstetrics and Gynaecology as well as criminal prosecutions of adult and childhood sexual offences He has acted for both the Prosecution and Defence. He has given evidence in all Australian States and Territories as well as New Zealand and Hong Kong.
In recent years Dr O'Connor has published papers on sexual boundary violations by medical practitioners,antisocial personality disorders in surgeons,visual impairments in surgeons,psychological screening of medical students, child sexual abuse by the priesthood ,informed financial consent in healthcare, obstetric violence,freebirth mortality ,vaginal mesh complications,gender dispairity in pain management and regulation of female cosmetic genital surgery.
