Elected to the Council of the Academy of Experts
1990
In 1990/91Melvin Lansley & Mark merged with the Hurd Rolland Partnership, a larger practice with offices throughout the United Kingdom. I became a Consultant to the Hurd Rolland Group with responsibility for Construction Technology, Design and Building Analysis. In this role, I am currently involved in a wide range of building types and in advising numerous large scale property owners in both the private and public sectors including the Crown Estates Commissioners, the DOE for Northern Ireland and other authorities.
I have assisted in the resolution of some 300 construction disputes and as an expert witness I have given evidence in the High Court, the Edinburgh Court of Session, the Royal Court of Guernsey and various County Courts. I have also given evidence at arbitration.
In 1992 I headed a multi-disciplinary survey of the Government Office Estate in Northern Ireland consisting of some 250 properties, plus estate roads and the extensive grounds of Stormont and Rathgael House, Bangor, a reservoir, car parks and other miscellaneous structures. This resulted in a Report on the Annual Maintenance Costs and initiated a 30 year rolling programme to address health and safety issues, repair and maintenance.
Melvin Lansley & Mark and the Hurd Rolland Partnership have, between them, won a number of architectural awards including the RIBA Architecture Award, a European Architectural Heritage Year Award, and several Civic Trust Awards and other Commendations for projects throughout the United Kingdom.
Recent work includes the refurbishment of two large listed buildings in central London and the Verulamium Museum at St. Albans, which is nearing completion. I have also been involved in the reconstruction of several major supermarkets following destruction by fire and am currently assisting in the completion of a large shopping centre.
The Hurd Rolland Partnership were also appointed by the Department for Education and Employment for a term commission, from 1993 to 1996, to carry out the professional scrutiny, assessment and valuation, in respect of architectural, planning, structural, services, health and safety, educational and costing matters of capital and repair projects for Voluntary Aided and Grant Maintained schools in the Greater London, Surrey and Kent region. During the period, the Hurd Rolland Partnership have dealt with over one thousand school projects.
HRP are currently acting as the EmployerÚs Representative on various PFI projects for The Department of Constitutional Affairs (formerly The Lord ChancellorÚs Department), the Home Office and various Police Authorities in connection with the provision of law courts and police stations.
1981
Joined the Firm of Melvin Lansley & Mark and subsequently became an Equity Partner.
As a Partner in Melvin Lansley & Mark, I was involved in providing a professional architectural service for a wide range of buildings including housing (in both the private and public sectors), offices, churches and community centres, schools, prisons, hotels and medical facilities. Work involving listed buildings and in the field of conservation was a speciality of the Firm. I have also prepared numerous reports in connection with building defects and litigation and have acted as an Expert Witness. Whilst most cases have been settled prior to trial, I have given evidence on several occasions in the High Court, the Edinburgh Court of Session and County Courts.
1968
Became a full Equity Partner in the Firm of Arthur Swift & Partners.
In my role as a Partner in the Firm of Arthur Swift & Partners, I was mainly engaged in large commercial projects including the redevelopment of the Arundel Estate in London, the Victoria Centre, Nottingham and the headquarters of the Ulster Bank in Belfast and the Northern Headquarters of the National Westminster Bank in Manchester. I was also involved in a number of major projects for Local Authorities and for Central Government, including housing, a covered market and bus station for the Corporation of Nottingham, Crown Courts in Hastings, work for the Ministry of Defence at the Portland Naval Base and other sites throughout the country and extensions to Heathfield School.
The Victoria Centre contained over 100 individual shops, four Department Stores, offices, entertainment facilities, etc. and 474 flats built in the air space over the commercial development. At the time work commenced, the railway tracks which ran through the site were still in use. Two new tracks were laid enclosed in a "tunnel" below the commercial development. Close liaison was maintained by me with British Railways engineering, signalling and traffic management staff during this difficult operation. I was also responsible for fitting out some of the shop units, including the John Lewis Department Store and the flagship store of Boots PLC. Because of the size and complexity of the development, fire precautions were evolved with the DOE, which were later incorporated into formal recommendations for fire precautions in enclosed shopping centres.
In addition, I was responsible for numerous factory and warehouse buildings throughout the United Kingdom. In some cases, these buildings were constructed to meet the specific requirements of such clients as CBR Jersey Mills, The British Machine Co. Ltd., Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd. and the DOE. Many, however, were erected on a speculative basis by a variety of developers. In addition, I also worked on many refurbishment and alteration projects. I was also involved in the design of hotels and in proposals to develop holiday facilities on the South Coast.
1963
Became an Associate Partner in the Firm of Arthur Swift & Partners.
1962
Elected Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and commenced practice with Arthur Swift & Partners in London.
1961
Completed training at the School of Architecture, The Polytechnic, Regent Street, London and awarded the Diploma in Architecture.
