His career spans research, contracting, and consulting, his expertise includes foundations, piling, slope stability, earthworks, working platforms, subsidence, heave, and retaining structures.
He has served as a geotechnical expert on the British Standards Committee (BSI B/526) and as the Lead UK Representative for the European Standards Committee on Special Geotechnical Works (CEN TC/288). He was also a Principal Author of the 3rd Edition of the ICE Specification for Piling and Embedded Retaining Walls (2017) and a past Chairman of the Federation of Piling Specialists’ Technical Committee.
Derek has provided expert advice, witness statements, and verbal evidence under cross-examination. He has been instructed by leading solicitors, including Fenwick Elliott, Nexa Law, and DeHeng Law (China).
