Expert Witness Snapshot
Chris Makin is a chartered accountant with a wealth of experience in dispute resolution of many kinds.
He started in general practice, taking over a run-down practice as a sole practitioner, and built it up, gaining lots of experience as auditor, financial accountant, tax accountant and father confessor to about 500 clients, ranging from sole traders to PLCs. After a series of mergers, he became a partner in an international firm with 250 partners. Having by then become a well-known forensic accountant, he left with his team to start the Leeds office of a national firm, building that into a full service office and then becoming national head of litigation.
He now practises alone (again!) as a forensic accountant, mediator and expert determiner.
Chris is accredited as a forensic accountant by ICAEW, as expert witness by TAE, as both mediator and expert determiner by TAE, and as mediator by CIArb.
He has 30 years experience as an expert witness, 25 years as an expert determiner, and 18 years as a mediator. He has given expert evidence at least 100 times, written at least 600 expert reports (who\'s counting?), and conducted over 100 mediations with a consistent 80% settlement rate.
He is a frequent lecturer, and writes many articles for legal journals; also a past contributor to Kemp & Kemp \"The Quantum of Damages\".
