Alexander Foege is an independent forensic engineer and building damage expert with more than 25 years of professional experience in architecture, construction, building diagnostics, forensic investigation and construction-related technical consultancy. Since 2010, his professional focus has increasingly centred on evidence preservation, building damage investigation, construction defects, damage management and the preparation of independent technical opinions and expert reports.
Mr Foege has acted as a court-appointed and privately instructed expert in technically complex construction and property disputes in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany. His work includes forensic investigation of building defects and damage, determination of probable causes and contributing factors, assessment of compliance with recognised engineering standards, evaluation of remediation strategies and costs, and the preparation of structured technical evidence for courts, lawyers, insurers, property owners, developers and other parties to construction disputes.
His forensic work covers existing and newly constructed buildings and includes cracking and structural movement, water ingress and moisture damage, waterproofing and drainage deficiencies, concrete defects, reinforcement-cover and durability issues, façades and building envelopes, workmanship and construction-quality deficiencies, and the technical assessment of repair and remediation measures. His investigations typically combine site inspections, photographic and video evidence preservation, review of drawings, calculations and construction records, measurements and material investigations, assessment against applicable technical standards and evaluation of the chronology and technical causation of observed damage.
Court-appointed assignments have included the investigation of construction defects, terrace waterproofing, drainage and corrosion-related durability issues in a residential construction dispute in Liechtenstein. In Switzerland, Mr Foege has undertaken a large-scale forensic investigation of an approximately 330-metre underground parking structure beneath a residential development, addressing water ingress, hydraulic and drainage behaviour, structural cracking, reinforcement-cover deficiencies, moisture-related deterioration, chloride exposure and long-term durability. The work involved repeated inspections, including investigations during heavy rainfall, measurements and structured preservation of technical evidence.
In another court appointment by the Regional Court of Verden, Germany, Mr Foege provided a cross-border technical and commercial assessment concerning the plausibility of construction-related service costs incurred in Switzerland. His work included analysis of invoices, service records, travel routes, time calculations and cost-allocation methodology.
Privately instructed forensic assignments have included complex investigations of structural timber construction, building-envelope deficiencies, workmanship deviations, moisture-related durability risks and unresolved structural verification issues. Such assignments may involve interdisciplinary cooperation with structural engineers and other specialist disciplines where required.
Mr Foege’s earlier professional experience includes architectural design and construction management, management of evidence-preservation and damage-management divisions, court expert assessments, construction monitoring using geodetic and geotechnical measurement methods, applied research and technical education. This background informs his approach to the systematic investigation, documentation and communication of technically complex construction and property disputes.
